Irish owners of OnePlus smartphones had personal information accessed by unauthorised parties, firm warns

OnePlus said it took immediate steps to stop the intrusion and to reinforce security.

IRISH OWNERS OF OnePlus branded phones have been warned that their personal information might have been accessed by hackers.

Many users this evening received an email from the company stating that part of their “order information was accessed by an unauthorised party”.

The company said that while payment information, passwords and accounts are safe, the users’ “name, contact number, email and shipping address may have been exposed”.

OnePlus said it took immediate steps to stop the intrusion and to reinforce security. They said they continue to investigate the breach.

The statement to customer reads: “We wanted to notify you of this so that you can be alert to people pretending to be OnePlus to get further information from you, or people asking you to buy products or services from them.

“OnePlus will never ask you for your passwords and any financial information should only be provided via a secure payment page on the OnePlus websiteor one of our partners if you are buying from us.

“We are deeply sorry about this, and are committed to doing everything in our power to prevent further such incidents.”

The exact number of accounts thought to have been compromised in Ireland is not yet known.

A spokesman for OnePlus confirmed the breach this evening.

A statement from the firm reads: “OnePlus has notified impacted users that we have discovered that some of their order information was accessed by an unauthorized party. We can confirm that all payment information, passwords and accounts are safe, but certain users’ name, contact number, email and shipping address may have been exposed.

“We took immediate steps to stop the intruder and reinforce security. Before making this public, we informed our impacted users by email. Right now, we are working with the relevant authorities to further investigate this incident.

“We are deeply sorry about this, and are committed to doing everything in our power to prevent further such incidents.”

It must be so frustrating trying to build a business to succeed while all the time there are hackers trying to beach your security 24/7 to try and steal from you. You can stop 999 out of a thousand.. but that one criminal that gets through can literally sink your business overnight. You can have the best security but hackers…like burglars, will find a way!

@Peter Cavey: Will be even more frustrating for them when the Data Taliban fine them €20m or 4% of their global turnover of 2018! GDPR is like prosecuting a shop for being a victim of shoplifting!

@MunsterPI: No, the analogy is not appropriate, as you erroneously suggest that only the “shop” is affected.

No, this is more like a “bank”, a bank that insecurely stored our personal information. A robber walked in the front door of the bank, that was not locked, and carried away our personal information. We, the owners of the stolen personal information, are now threatened with financial loss though phishing attacks and identity theft.

That is why custodians of our personal information are rightly held responsible for lax security along with the hackers who take advantage of it when events like this happen.

@Gerry Campbell: if they have your contact info and emails as well as your billing address then it would be easy for them to draft a very legitimate looking email from your bank, credit union, phone company or many other service providers. They could subsequently trick you (maybe not you personally, but someone not as mindful) into providing card details etc.

“The exact number of phones to have been compromised in Ireland is not yet known.”

The OpenPlus website, not the phones, was hacked. Hackers got people’s names, contact numbers, emails and shipping addresses. As a result…

“OnePlus is warning that someone may pose as OnePlus and try to extract further info from you since they know some of your info.”

A lot to be said for Apples privacy policy. I don’t think people know just how vulnerable they are online.

Very misleading article, because the phones weren’t hacked at all. OnePlus are probably the best “mainstream” phone on the market. I’m suspicious that this story is breaking at a time when all manufacturers are looking to sell into Black Friday and Christmas. I’ve never had a single issue with my OnePlus 6. It’s without a doubt, the best phone I’ve owned.
